Is it important to read "foreword" in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn?

I have to do a summary for "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" but im having trouble reading the "Foreword" part because its a little too much for my vocabulary and i just wanna skip it a read the story (im younger than a high schooler) but im afraid its important.
